EMBARQ-FedEx Collaboration Aims to Improve Public Transport in Developing Countries
FedEx will provide $1.4 million over two years to EMBARQ for sustainable transportation projects.

A new collaboration to optimize city bus operations in Mexico, Brazil and India was announced today by FedEx Corp. and EMBARQ, the World Resources Institute’s center for sustainable transport.

The development of this guidebook parallels efforts of the Government of India's Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) to become a source of financing for the procurement of new buses nationwide. Cities across the country that have received these buses are beginning to operate them.

Road traffic crashes are among the leading causes of death and disability in Indian cities, but the trend can be reversed through sustainable transport and planning that prioritizes people, not vehicles, concluded a group of public health and transport experts at today’s “Sustainable Transport Saves Lives” roundtable discussion.

A dearth of adequate infrastructure and services has been recognized as one of the most important roadblocks in the sustainable development of Indian cities.
