As several Indian Cities are implementing or considering the implementation of Bus Rapid Transit Systems (BRTS) as a key component of their public transport and urban development plans; experiencing BRT systems in operation, and having direct contact with agencies, practitioners and operators provides an invaluable opportunity for planners and decision makers to enhance on-going efforts in their own cities.
Keeping this in mind, EMBARQ India in collaboration with the Urban Mass Transit Company organized a study tour of tope BRT systems in Latin America from October 25, 2008 to November 11, 2008.
Top BRT Systems include:
The Indian delegation consisted of officials and corporaters from the Ahemdabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTC), OSC MAUDD of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Indore City Transport Services Limited (ICTSL), Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), Urban Mass Transit Corporation (UMTC), Vijaywada Minicipal Corporation (VMC), Project Development Corporation of Rajasthan (PDCOR) among others.
In addition to system and technical field visits, the Indian delegation had the opportunity to recount their own experiences at the IV International Sustainable Transport Congress on “Mobility and Health: Facing the Future”, organized by EMBARQ Mexico and EMBARQ/WRI. The Congresso is one of the most important regional events on linkages between Health, Environment and Transport.
The delegates also got to participate in Bogota's weekly Ciclovia translated to roughly mean bike path. The city closes nearly 120 km of roads and brings together nearly 7 million or one-fourth of the cities population to bike and walk. For a great video on [Sunday Ciclovia]
This capacity building activity has been endorsed by Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India and supported by SUMA and CAI-Asia. For details on the Study Tour
