A workshop on planning and implementation of bus rapid transit systems was conducted on the 3rd March, 2010 in Ahmedabad, as part of the city peering program for the India Sustainable Urban Transport Project (SUTP).
The workshop was well attended with over 30 participants, including representatives from the SUPT cities of Pimpri, Naya Raipur, Pune and Mysore. The workshop began with an opening address by Mr. Ke Fang, from the World Bank, and an inaugural address by Mr. I P Gautam, Municipal Commissioner, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
Professor Shivanand Swamy of CEPT and Mr. RR Varsani, Director of JnNURM, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, delivered a presentation and showed a video on the award winning Janmarg, followed by a highly interactive and informative question and answer session. Dr. Dario Hidalgo of EMBARQ then summed up lessons learnt from Janmarg and the way forward. The second half of the workshop consisted of a field trip wherein the workshop participants travelled on the Janmarg system.
This workshop provided a unique opportunity for participants to understand the approach to planning Bus Rapid Transit facilities and gain exposure to the various issues involved in the planning and implementation of BRT facilities. It was also a great opportunity for city officials to interact and exchange notes about their projects and learn from peers.
The workshop was hosted by EMBARQ. EMBARQ's participation in this event was funded by AUSAID. EMBARQ would also like to thank CEPT and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) for their cooperation in organizing this event.
