The Observer Researcher Foundation, (http://www.observerindia.com/) in partnership with EMBARQ, organized a roundtable called “BRTS for Mumbai – Why we must…and how we can!” on the 2nd of March, 2010, at the Observer Research Foundation office in Mumbai.
The roundtable was well attended, with participants representing transportation experts, government, media, and civil society organizations. After a welcome note by Mr. Rishi Aggarwal, Research Fellow at ORF, Dr. Dario Hidalgo, Senior Transport Engineer, EMBARQ delivered the keynote address for the event, and in his presentation titled Bus Rapid Transit Worldwide, he shared lessons learnt from around the world.
The conference also included a presentation by Madhav Pai, Technical Director, and EMBARQ on lessons from the Istanbul BRT. This was followed by a presentation by Abhijit Lokre, of CEPT on Ahmedabad’s highly successful Janmarg, and a presentation by Dr Vedagiri of IIT, Mumbai.
The presentations were followed by a panel discussion led by Mr. R Ramana, MMRDA (link to www.mmrdamumbai.org), Ms. Sulakshana Mahajan, MTSU, Mr. Ashok Datar, MESN and Mr. Sudhir Badami. The discussion highlighted the need for a BRTS in Mumbai and the steps necessary to achieve it. Mr Sudheendra Kulkarni, Chairman, ORF Mumbai, gave the vote of thanks.
