Improving Transit Efficiency
A workshop by Chennai City Connect, EMBARQ India and ITDP
21st March 2012, Chennai: EMBARQ India participated in a workshop organised by Chennai City Connect, an infrastructure platform for urban stakeholders, and ITDP, on improving the operational efficiency of the city bus services offered by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai.
Although public bicycling schemes like the ones across Europe, America and more recently, China, are a relatively new concept in India, Indore’s over 500 bicycle rental shops have been operational for close to 20 years, serving a limited closed user group clientele.
EMBARQ India facilitated a working session with Derek Trusler, an international transport facility design expert from Australia, and CEPT Institute, on the design of an interchange terminal facility on the Surat Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Derek Trusler has several years experience in planning and designing bus stations and terminals, including his work on the Guangzhou BRT in China.

In India, the bicycle has taken a backseat as a mode of urban transport. Bicycle use varies between 5-20% in Indian cities. The benefits of cycling- low cost, physical exercise, easier parking and easy access though are enough to justify efforts to encourage people to cycle more.
